Amidst escalating concerns about the dangers of misinformation (concerning vaccines, elections, etc.) and the generally deteriorating quality of public debate, demands for regulation of media companies’ content policies are ascendant, gaining favor from virtually all corners of the ideological spectrum. How much of a help would they be?

Tara Smith is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on issues in moral and legal philosophy. Publications related to tonight’s subject include her book Judicial Review in an Objective Legal System as well as papers concerning confusions in common ways of speaking about free speech and the First Amendment case against religious exemptions.
